I was fully NOT expecting this story to take such a dramatic turn. Good lord people can be crazy. As a general rule they probably wont hit you for 5 over, but they can. If they’re really being a stickler, they can, for whatever reason (e.g. quotas, school zone, bad day, racial profiling, etc), bust you for going even a mile over.

That said, I’ve maybe only once actually seen a person getting hit up for going 8 over.
