When I was there I had an XJ Cherokee, 4-cylinder 5-speed. It wasn’t awful on gas, it was reliable, roomy and capable enough. I’d do that again in a second.

Funny story, in 2005 I left a 1996 Honda Accord in California and “moved” to Maui, with no real plan and not much money. I immediately bought this:
