I'm fairly certain Ford didn't just "save" the robots, but he wanted become one of them so he would be immortal. I'd expect some kind of conscientiousness transfer story in season 2 with a robotic Ford.

I love Vice too. This episode had fun with the fact that the show is edited to make it feel like they reporters are always in danger. In this case ,they really are in danger.
