Well, people have been making tunnels for thousands of years already. If you want to improve on the concept you’re gonna have to come up with new equipment. It’s a tall order to come up with new ways to use outdated equipment like Musk is trying to do.

They’ve only reduced the cost by skipping a whole of the steps in making an operational and safe tunnel. Where are the emergency exit tunnels? The emergency ventilation? Those are two basic features a tunnel needs to be serviceable and I’m sure someone with more experience in the field can add a whole lot more to that…
