So much of her show is dedicated to humiliating her employees and audience, and “pranking” her guests. The lowest forms of humor. I don’t even consider it humor, just meanness.

It is legal in many states to fire someone for any reason at any time. It is called “at-will” employment. Technically, they can’t fire you for a discriminatory reason, but they can make up any number of other reasons to fire you.
They almost certainly came up with another reason to fire the employee knowing full well that the employee didn’t have the financial capability to fight a legal battle. And that, even if they did, their own legal team would decimate them.
HIPAA is a privacy act; as for FMLA, the employee must qualify for coverage, sign up with her employer, and provide medical accountability. Even then, it’s only good for 12 weeks.
Is it legal in any states to fire someone for being in a mental health facility? Isn’t that a HIPPA violation or a violation of the FMLA act? Of course I’m sure they came up with some other reasons “on paper” for her dismissal.
The fact that the show and (I assume) the host treat being nice as being part of the show’s "brand," and not the right thing to do as a human being, is the problem here.
