To those of you who have not read “The merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate” from Chiang’s collection, i HIGHLY recommend it. It’s an amazing story of potential, loss, and miles above “Arrival.” (Not that Arrival was bad, but I like the message of Merchant more. Could just be the “I’m getting old” in me.)

I cannot wait for this. I’m really digging the 13th Doctor. The one piece of Doctor Who lore I really hope they go back to is the Valeyard. I know that’s deep, but that has SO much potential for some interesting storytelling, and I think the 13th might be the way to do it.

Honey Boy is a perfectly fine movie, but “best”... not so much. Booksmart deserved a lot more love. So did Hustlers.

i think it largely depends if they set up two amazing plots and then decide to go in another direction, which is what happened in the Terminator movies.

Huh. The Joker’s on this list. What a surprise. I could have sworn you’ve loved it from all of the ways you commented breathlessly on it and the way it lives in the collective heads of the writers for so long.

Maybe. He’s a talented director, but any talent is like the Hulk... it depends on where you aim it. I just think that he tries to simplify complicated stories by showing us the outsider, then the inevitable pushback to the film focuses on his big message, and not the nuance.

D’Arcy Carden should have won performance for best ensemble. Just sayin’.
