Yep, it does have that role currently. Just like lots of other words that mean the same thing. We now have lots and lots of vague intensifiers and fewer capable of precision. The language is diminished by it.

Taking something from being a precise, meaningful term to a vague intensifier strikes me as a curious concept of “evolution”. In fact, it seems like a great example of devolution.
While the car driver was an idiot, the the camera installer is VERY at fault here (though you could argue about the first).
