I had the pleasure to go touring around a bit of Europe visiting a variety of important places during the World Wars last year, and can't even begin to express the magnitude of it. It has been so long since both wars, but there's still such a number of vivid signs and scars of war.

I see it like any other kind of entertainment. The same question could be asked about almost any pastime that doesn't achieve anything in the end. Watching sports or even reading is an example.
