A drone is any UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) that has autonomous flight capability.

If the wing survived, and if they made it to thicker air, they could have used the emergency escape pole. Their orange launch/entry suits would have saved them in that case. Sure, we’d have lost a shuttle, bit the crew would have made it if the wing didn’t fail.
