Strictly speaking, Lincoln didn't become the first president of the US to have filed a patent until March 4, 1861, when he, well, became president of the US. On March 10, 1849, he would have instead become the first patent filer who would one day be president of the US.

I imagine there was some pressure to not raise a fuss, or perhaps a charitable donation involved.
