I take all my health-related advice from Jenny McCarthy.

When people go into fix-it mode, it's perceived as:

You sound like a real catch.

Learn to love yourself, then others will love you too!!!

He also did some pretty dodgy stuff in South America, including colluding with the ruling regime and giving people up to be tortured. As you say, he's a smooth operator who doesn't look like Senator Palpatine, so he's getting an easier ride than the last pope.

The funny thing is Rulke, Jezebel DOES realise what he's done recently, and reported on his excommunication of mobsters last week. Pope Francis is good at optics and gestures that don't actually mean anything, such as getting out of the Popemobile, not living in the Papal palace and washing the feet of women and

The dude in a lab coat told them there was no risk to the person being shocked, but after a certain point (300V? 350V?) the person stopped responding. This point came shortly after the person said they had a heart condition and were feeling very unwell. Interviews done afterward show that the study participants

Your view was also shared by the scientists at the time. From Wikipedia:

This article talks about niceness, which is a bit of red herring - it seems the original study is about agreeableness, one of the Big Five personality traits. Agreeable people tend to do what they're told is a less exciting headline, I suppose. I agree completely, the people you name are disagreeable in the best

You're comparing my typo to you confusing psychology with psychoanalysis. That's just silly! I didn't pick you up on your errors such as "Most psychologist are...", as I'm not interested in point scoring.

You don't know what psychology is. I'm not even going to engage with this part of your comment, I hope you forgive me.

That's interesting, I would have assumed conscientiousness was negatively correlated with greater shocks. Political orientation and social activism are also interesting variables to mention - looks like the writers are leaving us on a cliff hanger so we'll buy the damn paper!

The study looks at agreeableness, not niceness. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agreeable… The original obedience/compliance studies of Milgram, Asch, Zimbardo etc were performed in the aftermath of WWII to investigate what might cause people to do such awful things to each other. Not "meaningfull" enough for you?

It's hackneyed now, but many people were left traumatised by Milgram's original studies. Many modern studies test the phenomenon of obedience in slightly different ways, too - I remember one charming study where people actually shocked puppies.

For the most part, I dislike astronomy. The universe is such a complex place that you can't really generalise from one part to another...

People assume that more participants=more reliable study, but that isn't necessarily the case. If you're using null hypothesis significance testing (which is the norm in psychology), the effect size has an impact on the sample size you should be going for. If you go for a sample that's too large it's possible for tiny

Or maybe a fear of poverty?

Absolutely. Masculinity can be about all those good things, but it's the toxic real-men-don't-cry shit that seems to be more prevalent.

Well, allegedly the Nazis aren't the Nazis, according to yesterday's article. The Nazis are nationalists who wear hipster clothing and listen to white reggae.
