I almost think he was so loopy from the boarding that he genuinely mistook the ref for an opposing player and hit him in retaliation. His head isn’t down as he approaches the ref, so it’s not like they snuck up on each other. I certainly don’t think he intentionally meant to hit a ref but he was gunning for someone.
