Thank you for speaking up.

Technically speaking Northern Ireland is not a nation, it’s a country that is part of a larger nation. The British Abortion Act of 1967 exempt Northern Ireland from it, the law covering Northern Ireland is the 1861 Offenses Against the Person Act.

I’m not cheerleading because I’m completely aware of Northern Ireland’s faults. Socially and politically the area remains at an infantile level of development compared with much of Western Europe. You ask me to open my eyes - but what would you like me to see that I am not seeing?

Replying to bump up. Thank you for sharing your experience. As unnecessary as it should be, putting a face to these stories helps.

Thanks for the expansion, although it appears as a strange mix of ignorance and xenophobia. I’m from Northern Ireland, and while it is in many ways an awful place, one thing I can assure you is that its people do not aspire to be English. And I say that with affection and respect to my English friends. Did you mean

In the US at least, that seems to be how they’re attacking abortion... death by a thousand cuts. I would really like my medical procedures not to be political fodder, but that seems unlikely in my lifetime. So I suppose it’s fighting the game of inches with these dbags. I’m damn well not letting them have their way.

So much love to you. It’s just absolutely archaic here (I’m a fellow Southern Irish woman). No one should be forced to travel with the financial, psychological and emotional burden that entails. It’s simply not fair, right or just.

As a Dr in Northern Ireland, I can’t tell you how happy this decision makes me.

I’m one of those women who has had to travel for an abortion from southern Ireland to the UK. As hard as having an abortion is its nothing compared to the trauma of having to navigate your way around a different country. I was lucky though it was an option for me, for so many others with no money or freedom it’s

A start is a start.

Fuckin about time. Hopefully the republic follows suit.
