he actually learned by mowing fields of thyme

When Marty met Maggie (…?), the camera panned to show their daughters in framed photos. Foreshadowing? Or a red herring the show has been slowly developing?

Ah yeah, the 'I wasn't sure if I was losing my mind' as he searches Tuttle's house and several versions of him pop up was a nice touch.

Pizzolatto has been holding on that one for years.

You never know what it will be. True for Rust, true for the viewer. Rust and that deputy got into a fight early on.

I have been downvoted by proxy. Fix this, AVClub!

Also, there was a shot of Rust and Tuttle standing side by side against the window, as if to remind the viewers that Rust is also tall.

I'm glad this wasn't released as a Netflix-style binge-watch. That would be too much to bear. I would watch straight through, life allowing, because I couldn't not, but the level of intensity … shiiiiiiiiiit

Time is a flab ass, perhaps?

At the end, did Marty put bullets into his gun, or take them out, a la the station brawl?

That scene where Rust talks to the catatonic girl, it's like she recognized Rust as one of her attackers. As if she recognized a facial feature, maybe the eyes, while the rest ("the scars") were a mask.

The show is about Rust and Marty so I don't have a problem with the killer being an obscure or briefly introduced character.

I think Rust mentioning the antlers is his way of fucking with the suspect like he always does, like casually situating himself within the range of ledoux's mental state but demeaning him.

Woody is blond + the "yellow king" - just another detail

Thing about Marty is he's apparently been out late a lot, enough that drinking and hooking up with the court reporter might not account for it. Also, he talks about feelings of guilt - we assume it's marital troubles and lack of attention to his kids, but maybe that's a misdirection.

On the same page. That moment has not left my mind at all.

people who think too much

Ground covered at some length in Dexter.

I agree. My also amateur read on Rust is that he's something of a paradox - a virtuous sociopath. Twisted enough that he can grapple with evil, but at his core somewhere working for the betterment of society.

what, like carrie mathiesen?
