Doesn't work. The camera takes a picture of whatever it's pointed at, just in the future. So unless the picture was taken in the actual jail cell he would occupy, it couldn't show that scene.

Yeah, well… that's the director's cut. I'm willing to give a director more credit if the extended cut improves on the theatrical, but if the theatrical is better, I don't count that against them. Compromising on your vision when it's the right thing to do is part of what makes someone a good artist.
Alien, for all its accomplishments, is pretty silly at times. It gets by largely on atmosphere. None of 'em are above reproach, but the first two are still enjoyable and well-made.
