The amount of people complaining here shows that Lifehacker should do an article explaining how Chromecast works, many people don't seem to understand the difference between web streaming and local network streaming.

You can save three quarters of the price of an ATV. That is really the only point. If you already own a streaming receiver you'll hardly need another one plugged into the same TV.

If you cast a browser tab then you are restricted by the speed of your own network. Casting a supported service like YouTube/Netflix etc. is solely down to the speed of your internet as you are essentially telling the service to stream the video to your chromecast.

You need a friend with a Mac to make the installer USB stick anyway, ask them to make a temp user profile for you, sign in (or sign up) for an itunes account then use the app store to buy Mavricks and download it.
