It sounds to me like the best option would be a small increase in a gas tax and a large gas guzzler tax on new cars making less than 25 mpg combined. The gas tax needs to be tied to something other than the whims of politicians, say inflations or GDP, etc.

Where I live, if you see an Explorer of this vintage driving around, it has the V8. I had one and it was great. The AWD was very effective in the winter. The downside was the abysmal fuel mileage. In town, during winter, I was lucky to hit double digits on a tank.

Does this make me a crossover?

Have had Legacy’s with the 2.5. I can’t remember ever thinking I needed more power.  That engine in the Crosstrek will be plenty and more. I also don't feel the need to compensate for any physical shortcomings.
