Given this article, you’ve convinced me to give that show another go. Like KLK it turned me off with its fan service-y aspects (specifically the treatment of an 11 year old which you brought up)

i remember renting flcl and telling my SO “this is supposed to be clever” and about 2 minutes in, Naota gets an erection.
Thanks!!!
What western country do you live in? America, the proverbial western country, has a pretty stringent view when it comes to discussing or viewing any sexual content.
One of my sources gave me a relevant quote I didn’t end up including. He essentially said that how progressive you are depends on your actions, not your taste in media.
I can’t think of any legal Anime (there are of course ecchi and banned ones) that depicts anyone under the age of 18 engaging in anything “bad”.
Fan service is one of the biggest issues I have with recommending anime to people who I think would enjoy plotlines and frames, etc.
There’s plenty of anime for you to enjoy if you don’t like fanservice
This is such a fascinating and delicate subject to me because in bringing up genuine feminist (and humanist, in my opinion) concerns, those who enjoy this part of the medium of anime effectively feel “kink shamed” by the critics.
Not my cup of tea either but literally nobody is being hurt by this. I’d much rather them just be honest about it and everyone just leave it alone as something that isn’t for them.
My only problem with fan service is that it’s just another lame anime trope. It often adds nothing to the story and only further stereotypes anime as shallow pleasure-viewing.
As long as it’s up front about what it is, I don’t see a problem, nor do I see a need to dance so delicately around the issue. Time for a numbered list!
My line is simple. I draw a sharp line between reality and fiction. When dealing with reality I, as everyone should, deal with morals and ethics and all of the things that are required to remain in good standing in society. Why, though, should I care what happens to a fictional character beyond whatever the plot…
A lot of people pussyfoot around this subject, turning it into a tit-for-tat argument before long. The truth is that neither side has to be a dick about it. People may think I’m a boob for my opinion, but fan-service is a personal issue for every fan. I don’t want to be too anal about the subject, but there is no harm…
discuss sexual topics in an adult manner like Western society does
I couldn’t finish ‘Dance with Vampire Bund’ because of that. She looked like a 10 year old but was really some bullshit amount of years old because she was a vampire. She was almost always naked and it just got under my skin.
I’m glad this is getting covered, since the gradual increase of it in just about everything is much of what’s left me wanting for just about any anime I can actually enjoy watching. I don’t care for fanservice and I want stuff I can watch with my family, so early focus on it pretty much eliminates my chances of liking…
The most important rule of anime fan service is “don’t show me a 12 year old and tell me it’s ok, she’s really 1000 years old”.
More censorship is just bad overall, imo.
Oh no way would I watch. But just knowing it’s happening and his supporters cheering and the whole world watching.
