For whatever its worth, Ash did win the Orange Islands league. It may not have been a traditional league with 8 required badges built on the foundation of one of the video games, but it was a league none-the-less that he was able to make it to the final 6 on 6 battle and win.

Of course he lost. The entire show is predicated on his journey to become the best. If he wins then that journey is over. There’s no reason to have a show. It doesn’t become believable that he would lose in another tournament.

I’m not psychologist but I would argue that if someone were to watch Ash lose the finals every time they would more likely attribute it to some innate status that ASH is destined to lose rather than losing and winning being a typical fact of life.
