That was long after they stopped using "stock cars" so I don't know what your point is.

Actual stock cars in ovals would be extremely boring and uncompetitive. Without a spec car, one car would dominate and the races would be boring. Just take a look at race results from the 60s and 70s where cars would win by several laps over 2nd place.
I don't ride, but isn't lane splitting only supposed to be done in slow or stopped traffic? You aren't seriously suggesting bikes should be allowed to Pass between cars at speed, because that is crazy.
So if we robbed a bank together, and in the process I decide to shoot you and take all of the money, I shouldn't be charged with murder? A drug deal goes bad, someone gets killed, no murder charges? That's just dumb.
You know what's a huge responsibility? The safe and legal operation of a motor vehicle on public streets. If it is unsafe to operate your vehicle because there are too many pedestrians around, you are still responsible for your own actions
You can criticize the deceased for the poor decisions they made, but that doesn't diminish the much, much greater responsibility that the drivers and organizers face for their actions.
Rather than 'don't care who it is', I see this as rightfully charging the parties involved in racing, organizing and operating an illegal activity that resulted in the death of two people.
The intent was to street race, a dangerous and illegal activity, which resulted in the death of two people. The intent to commit an illegal act is there.
Semantics be damned. Dude is a criminal, going to prison for his illegal activities that resulted in the death of two people, as he should. Let the judges and lawyers decide for how long and under what charges.
If you kill someone while doing something illegal you will go to prison. How hard is that to understand?
Legally that's a hard one since you could claim you happened to be passing by, but yeah, the people that enable street racers are every bit as awful as the racers themselves, and those are the assholes trying to stick up for these lowlifes
Your local Autocross.
Apparently you can be ticketed for spectating a street race n California.
Organizing and starting the drag race is willful participation in an illegal act.
They didn't participate in the race in any way, but. If you could prove they helped to organize or coordinate the event then yes they too could be charged. Spectating, you can claim you just happened upon it. Being the guy starting the races, your caught red handed.
That is how it works though. If you and I rob a bank together, and in the commission of that crime I shot and killed someone, you would then be equally guilty of murder.
