Just like when he threw down his lightsaber in order to ensure the Emperor’s defeat, Luke used nonviolence more effectively. I also don’t think Luke wanted to saddle Kylo with the guilt of killing his uncle. Also now he can come back like Yoda did after he oned himself with the force.

I’d argue he does feel some remorse about his father (who gave him permission to help him do whatever he needed to do btw). The fact that he was about to shoot Leia, but then backed off is proof that he’s not completely set in his evil ways.
