I always thought the Borg were borrowed from a book I read as a kid. I think it was called "Berserker", it was from my Dad's sci-fi collection,so probably 50s or 60s vintage? The description of the machine's voice, pieced together from the voices of thousands of humans it has tortured and killed, is unforgettable.
