Uhhhhhh yes and no. The world building itself is kind of interesting if get past the plausibility aspects but the game often doesn't focus on those elements. The average player might never be affected by a larger scale event (either scripted or happenstance) if they don't search them out.

I think its more of a desaturated red, if you see some of the remastered Akira footage you'll notice that they upped the saturation of the red to appear more like cherry.
