I thought it was pretty straightforward as well. Doesn’t make up for the other issues with that movie and certainly not his shitty behavior, but at no point did I think “Natasha’s a monster because she’s childless.”

The thing that gets me about that storyline in AoU is that it’s an easy fix: Natasha can be a ‘monster’ for all the things she did prior to joining SHIELD, as Whedon had already pointed out in the previous movie.
