Ellen is interwoven for me with my own coming out. My parents were both fans of her sitcom, and had been watching up to that point, and I knew it. I, fourteen, read in the newspaper about how she was a lesbian, and was coming out on her show, and how big a deal this was.

I get that it’s meant to be sexy or impressive or whatever but ultimately a middle-ish aged man standing in front of a mirror in his underpants and socks, holding his own dick just reads as depressing to me. That is a melancholy moment. Excessive hashtags make this seem sadder.

I find her use of “disgusting” interesting. It certainly is one of Donald Trumps favorite epithets. It seems odd used in this context. “Upsetting,” “disturbing”—-but “disgusting”?
