Its almost, as if, someone realized that MAX is a stupid name with zero recognition. HBO, on the other hand, is a 51 year old institution that has been making original programming since the 70s.

He’s pretty milquetoast, but I think that’s the point - he plays straight man while the guest’s wheels come off. The concept only works when the guest knows the assignment and doesn’t take the questions seriously. He’s going to sit back and fan the flames while Shaq and Conan melt down, but he can’t save the episode…

I mean he co-created the show and has been on it from the beginning, it isn’t like he was handed an easy job, he created it. And IMO he’s a pretty engaging host and does a better job interviewing celebrities than most people do.

I don’t know I kind of feel the opposite, though I still rarely watch them.  When it comes to interviewers he seems a lot more engaged and connected to the person they are interviewing.
