I feel like it has to be mentioned that the vast majority of male division I soccer games and many MLS games are still played on artificial turf. Artificial turf is a shitty surface for all advanced soccer players, but let’s not pretend that this is only isolated to female athletes.

That’s growth, not absolute viewers numbers (of which there are none for the men in that Awful Announcing piece you linked to). If I have one viewer in 2011 and three viewers in 2015 HOLY SHIT VIEWERSHIP INCREASED 200%!

How do we know she got hurt BECAUSE of the turf? People get injured on grass, also.

Claiming that the Men’s World Cup numbers are “slipping” relative to the WWC is preposterous. The growth rate of the Men’s is slower than the women’s, because all of 600,000 people watched the 2011 WWC and a whopping million watched the 2015 WWC. Contrast that with the ~22 million viewers watching the 2014 Cup.

Women’s

A co-worker of mine was asking me all about women’s football during the WWC and was surprised when I professed my absolute ignorance. “Don’t you love soccer?” “Well, yeah, but you love baseball and I don’t see you following NCAA softball either.” The fact is I only have a few hours a week I’m willing to devote to

Could it be because they don't make any money for US Soccer? Here's a tip: Instead of complaining go buy a jersey and a ticket to a game

“It’s understandable, if not just, that the Women’s National Team made far less money than the USMNT from their respective World Cups (although, the men’s World Cup’s superior TV numbers are slipping domestically).”

Because by and large women’s sports are not fun to watch, much the same way that peewee football is not fun to watch. Why would people be as excited to watch far inferior overall athletes play much worse competition in a less skilled, slower fashion, in an already confusing game to many Americans?
