Is there any benefit to playing the first Dragon Age before Inquisition?

I sort of approached Skyrim in the opposite way. I steered clear of the civil war and dragonborn quests and focused on the side quests until it became necessary to move the other two forward. I'll make sure to modify my strategy accordingly for Inquisition.
