Yeah, come to think of it I guess Roger was consciously making a joke…but still a very heavily laden joke given Roger's past.

Some people will doubtless think this is complete B.S., but….in Roger & Marie's final scene, Roger — attempting to speak French — refers to Marie as his "mother." Obviously, this is because he speaks bad French, but I see this as a more subtle joke with two meanings:
