I think it's pretty obvious that Sam Taylor-Johnson took the source material and — as gently as she could — exposed it as the story of an abusive relationship. As it stands, if this is the last entry, it's basically about a girl who grows up, finds her own confidence, and learns to stand up for herself against her

I KNEW IT. Sam Taylor-Johnson directed it as a domestic violence PSA with a silver lining ending. I hope there aren't any sequels, so it can stand alone in its horror and DJ's character's eventual triumph.

I don't know about Dakota not getting anything better— based on all the reviews I've seen, she's viewed as the best part of the film. Critics praised her performance far more than they did Dornan's.
