I do as a handy short hand form of reference, if imperfect, of portrayals of women in film. A female lead isn’t entirely new or revolutionary though it is welcome. But women having relationships with each other outside of context to men can sadly still be an annoyingly uncommon thing.

The actual Marvel comic, which is pretty much responsible for 100% of the nostalic popularity for the character as opposed to the actual toy, is worth tracking down. It’s well written with some really nice art.
I recommened going out and finding some back issues. They shouldn’t be expensive at all. A lot of fun to read.

A token LGBT character would be an red shirt who has no back story who just makes random appearance with only a few lines. An LGBT captain would be the opposite of that.
