The Catholic Church has never succeeded in branding itself as hip and never asked celebrities to promote it. Also the idea of being a cafeteria Catholic is pretty mainstream, so people are forgiving. When a “new” religious movement, which is really just an old one in new clothing, gets good press, people get skeptical.
