Why bother with the VGA->HDMI? It looks like it has two Displayport inputs, which is just a repackaged HDMI any way. Passive HDMI->Displayport works great and is pretty cheap.

Love the article, but this is a bit of a odd example of restoring a game. There are some great restores on the KLOV message boards.
