I don’t think it has much to with the generation. The Internet basically didn’t exist yet when I was in high school, but I have no doubt whatsoever that I had peers who could/would have watched a girl being raped while laughing and giggling and memorizing the “juicy” details to share later to prove what a dirty slut

You really think it’s dangerous to assume that a girl who spent ten minutes filming another girl’s rape while laughing had no interest in helping the victim but, in fact, was working to add public humiliation to her trauma?

  • No

I think it’s a quote from the prosecutor, actually.

You hope she’s acquitted?!

I agree. You’d think if she were trying to secure evidence that she would take a regular video on her phone, not on an app that erases the video after a certain amount of time...

“And as she immediately told the police, she was filming in order to preserve, not to embarrass or to shame or to titillate anybody.”

Whether or not they had an established friendship, I can’t imagine this girl not helping the victim. I’d help someone I just met five minutes ago. I’d help a woman I passed on the street and didn’t even make eye contact with, for Christ’s sake.

She might be, to you. But by any objective standard she is less guilty than the rapist. Still a major, and likely irredeemable, piece of shit.

Is livestreaming to collect “evidence” anything like Pete Townshend’s “research” into child porn?

I understand that “Casual Acquaintance” and “Person She Was Allegedly Friends With But Who She Ultimately Betrayed in a Way That Doesn’t Even Make Sense to a Rational Human” is entirely too long a description for the title.

I still think I would’ve chosen nearly any other word to describe Lonina’s relationship to the

“What are feelings?”

This is going to be watershed.

Not the friend who recorded it. Obviously she’s fucking guilty as hell and should be prosecuted. What I mean, though, is that here we have a rapist pleading Not Guilty and there is 100 percent complete video proof that the rape was committed, complete with the victim saying “No!”

I understand wanting to make sure there’s evidence, but your phone has its own camera app where you can record video without broadcasting your friend’s rape to a bunch of strangers.

Ohio teenager Marina Lonina, 18, faces a litany of charges after Franklin County prosecutors alleged that she streamed the rape of a 17-year-old friend on Periscope.

Poor girl - I hope she gets support/help. And for the rapists to get 1,000+ years. And for the girl who filmed? I just don’t know what to think or what should happen to/with her. This story quickly moves up to the list of WORST STORIES OF 2016.

The “I got swept up” defense? If “affluenza” worked, perhaps this one will too.

“You don’t want to lose track of the fact that she’s a high school student and she and her friend were clearly taken advantage of,” Shamansky told the New York Times.
