Can verify the inexplicable CT jam band love.
Can verify the inexplicable CT jam band love.
I thought it was him being somewhat sarcastic — that this is something that f***ing sucks that he saw coming from a mile away (like a game show contestant who knows they’re going home with the year’s supply of rice-a-roni), but he’s putting on a surprised face for appearances sake (like a game show contestant trying…
growing up in CT, the most popular bands in HS were the grateful dead, phish, dave matthews and blues traveler. all jam bands that i fucking hated. and i still pretty much hate them.
Kids love any song as long as you sing with inflecccctiioonnn.
I thought the point was that although everyone who goes on the show knows about the parting gift but nobody believes they will be the one sitting there in abject defeat clutching a case of Rice a Roni.
Blues Traveler is the 90s blues pop that even Dave Matthews fans will be happy to dunk on without a hint of self-awareness.
Their music is alright. Not terrible, not great, just alright. I could sit in a Chili’s and say “Oh yeah, I remember this” without vomiting on my Crispy Chicken Fingers. The hyperbole from those…
Ok, then how about “Two Princes” by the Spin Doctors?!? It’s rootsy, hacky-sack pop at its 90's finest (worst).
Not seeking recommendations on how to get my kid deeper into Blues Traveler at this time, thanks.
You should play “Hook” for her, from the same album. Even catchier (I mean, it’s called “Hook” for crying out loud) and all kids love the part where he sings real fast.
Nothing profound there—just something annoying you have to live with. Like “Run-Around.”
Now THIS is how you give citations! Nice job mtdrift.
I found a free link to Sahlins’ original text:
No problem! You asked the right anthropologist. :)
The theory is sometimes called “the original affluent society”, and it comes out of a proposal made by the economic anthropologist Marshall Sahlins in the 1960s.
It goes something like this: even though hunter-gatherers appear to those of us in industrialized society…
Mmmmm, not really. Research over the last four decades has shown that people in hunter-gatherer communities have tons of free time - way more than folks living in agrarian systems. Living in hunter-gatherer societies doesn’t mean it’s a constant 24-7 search for food.
Meh. More like I just thought it was funny.
Let’s see: Duck Tales, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Talespin, Darkwing Duck... Good. I now have a playlist of cartoon songs constantly looping inside my head for the next three to four weeks.
They did sort of prove that they are having an effect on business. They put out some ticket sales numbers saying so many millions of Black Panther tickets were bought by movie pass holders, they failed to prove that these tickets wouldn’t have been sold without movie pass’ existence, but it’s still compelling.
Avasarala. The actress playing Avasarala
I don’t even watch the show and seeing one scene of her as Avasarala was enough to make me read every line in her voice. Different strokes, I guess.
Yeah she’s pretty well regarded. I think you’re just not accustomed to her Persian pacing and accent. My only beef with her is that there’s not *nearly* enough fucking swearing from her. It’s basically who she is and SyFy is neutering her. Last week they changed a bleep into a “frickin’” and it was just awful.
