Yeah the 90s is a tall order to top. Sure its janky in some areas but man is the tone, story, and music on point. Like you said the still shots and it not being 100% true to the manga are my only problems. I just look forward to them continuing the story and being able to be more true the manga.

agreed, I loved the original berserk. and I never once had a problem with the art, I loved it.

It was one of the first dark, adult anime tv series I had seen, and I liked it so much I actually read the manga for a while, because I really wanted to find out what happened after the eclipse, and the last DVD in the series I rented was

And many other classics began in the 90's. Ghost in the Shell. Evangelion. Gundam. I feel like the 90's anime style worked quite well for serious stories. The current style does lead to some smoother action scenes, but that will never discount the action scenes in anime of the past.
