I don’t think he’s trying to save his nomination. I think he legitimately means it. I can’t imagine any judge of any political stripe being sympathetic to Trump’s bullshit attacks on them right now.
To be fair, countless judges and legal scholars have called for Gorsuch to criticize Trump’s comments. Gorsuch is in a unique position in that Trump has already endorsed him, so when Gorsuch criticizes Trump it seems like non-partisan commentary. If another federal judge criticized him, then Trump would just dismiss…
If he even makes it to confirmation hearings. I wouldn’t be surprised if he “respectfully declines” the nomination after this weekend (read: Trump threatens him until he bows out).
Gorsuch seems like a good man and very qualified for the bench. Unfortunately, this Supreme Court seat was stolen. This is where the Democrats should start and end the discussion.
