I'd guess the latter. Not only is it cheaper but nothing in there is anything but fair use. They can just claim the same inspiration from art history. I'm blanking on any terms, but it is a very Rodan look. For example one of the cooler Hunger Games posters had a similar asthetic
I would argue that by use of scale he gives the pieces (at least the ones I'm seeing) a very distinct focal point. The rest is just incredible sub levels of detail that the viewer can get lost in.

But science fiction is about all about story. Those costumes are not science fiction. Science fiction is comic books, books, tv and movies.

Judging by their reactions in the picture I would guess the kid factor wasn't as controversial over there for whatever reason. From what I understand (not just stereotypes) Eastern European kids aren't as coddled as over here in the US so I guess it was just taken at face value.
