I worked at a music org where my boss claimed that KCRW/MBE “discovered” some famous indie artist. No, actual college and independent radio stations discovered them and KCRW just checked the CMJ charts.

Nobody *needs* music reviews anymore the way they used to. They can just stream the music online. No risk of buying an album that ends up sucking.

How could this get past the brainstorming stage without someone realizing what a terrible idea this is?

This is a depressing story. Lorne needed to go like 15 years ago. I know NBC is terrified of trying anything new, but Lorne is problematic and also has a lot of casting blind spots that have hurt the show. 

Maybe they already do this, but people should have to qualify for Everest the way they do for certain marathons.
