What are you talking about? The PSX version had 320x240 backgrounds and 320x240 characters, end of story. The fact that it would’ve been harder (but not impossible) to tell the difference on a CRT back then does nothing to change the fact that we can see the difference now.

Well I just don’t agree that they introduced an inconsistency that wasn’t there before, just so that the characters could have a higher resolution. All it does is intensify the low resolution of the backgrounds to the eye.

Umm, how old are you? If you really are old enough to have been an adult at the launch of this game, like I was, you should know what it really looked like. Only the PC port last year upressed the characters while leaving the backgrounds the same.

That top image would look so much better if the characters were the same resolution as the background. I can’t for the life of me imagine why anyone would want to play the game looking like a cobbled together photoshop.
