It was only criticized by people with no motion control who wrongly tried to play the game with the sort of flailing motions you’re talking about. :) Everyone else loved it.

The Wii had plenty of games with the sort of rolling ball puzzles that BotW has, that worked with the base Wii remote. Monkey Ball being the most famous.
