On the note of Band of Brothers, I would add "Unsere Mutter Unsere Vater" - (Our fathers and mothers) A sadly obscure, but very high quality german mini series. A theme of Germany chewing through it's youth during the war.

I am sad no russian movie made the list, but if I had to pick one, I would recommend this. Completely strips out the fake glory and pathos from war movies. Come and See is an unflinching gaze into the very bottom of human existence brought about a war.
