Watch Dark Matter. It sucks that it got canceled (with barely anyone noticing) and this show gets hyped. Dark Matter was a ridiculous low budget sci fi show that managed to be fun without being obnoxious. It revisited all the old Star Trek tropes but dealt with them in its own way.

I didn’t like him in A Million Ways to Die in the West at all but he’s good here. I do wonder if the show would be better with a stronger actor as Captain (Patrick Stewart carried a lot of nonsense that I don’t think the Orville Cast will be able to when it no doubt arrives) but I have no complaints. He’s done good…

That person’s reasoning is nonsense. The director made a judgment call. The goal was to be diverse and avoid outdated stereotypes that are offensive today. So they had one character Asian, another black, and another made from male to female and of Celtic origin.
