The firefighter donning gear may have been the driver of the fire truck. Or the captain who in most cases doesn’t fully gear up until after being on scene for reasons of scene evaluation, etc. Or he was geared up while in route but had to remove gear to adequately check injured etc, etc.

I want to add a few tidbits concerning some comments about auto manufacturers recommended methods of firefighting due to these types of batteries. Well trained firefighters are not going to read it. Why? It’s not saying anything different than basic(!) firefighting training concerning metal fires.

Like others said, you are making assumptions. This is not an electrical fire, this is a runaway thermal chemical reaction and isn’t something new to firefighters, its just in a different form. Most fire truck don’t carry much Class D extinguishers because there are a few types of Class D for specific metal fires.
