I think you're all missing the fact that this guy worked for the NSA. It would have been a matter of time before he was caught if he had remained hidden and in the US. Just the paranoia of that would drive anyone to run and make noise to the media as some form of protection.

That isn't really cowardice, it is just good strategy. The opposite is true too; standing up out of cover during a firefight isn't bravery, it is stupidity.
