I forgot who it was (Perhaps Hawking but I can't recall right this moment) who touched on this, but basically said that the sheer size of the universe is double-edged sword. On the one hand, it's quite probable there are other life forms out there, and on the other the likelihood of us ever crossing paths is not good.
