Good/bad strategy aside, there’s also the possibility that his lawyer didn’t know about these texts. It’s not uncommon for clients to “forget” to tell their own lawyers about bad facts until confronted with them by the other side.

OMG exactly. I’m so tired of reporters letting him give insane answers without any follow-up or push-back because they are so anxious to get to the rest of their questions. Every interview seems to go the same:
