Agreed. I think Nintendo is trying to position themselves so that they can copy the “Apple tax” model of overcharging for accessories. MS has been doing this too with their ridiculously expensive Surface keyboards.

Yes it only works in dock mode. The adapter plugs into the dock and then the dock plugs into the Switch. I haven’t tried using a USB A-to-C adapter to plug it directly into the Switch so I don’t know if Nintendo designed the OS to handle that. Fortunately Nintendo’s USB adapter has used USB since the Wii. For all their faults Nintendo adopted those cabling standards pretty quick. They also haven’t used proprietary memory card formats since the Gamecube.
