Well, generally speaking, modern culture isn’t big on sweeping murder under the rug, or convincing people who’ve survived attempted murders that it was just a misunderstanding (and possibly one they themselves are responsible for), or glamorizing murder for advertising. Nor are there sweeping narratives dedicated to

Calm down, maybe?

Naw, they’ll let him off. They let off the guy who shot up that LGBT center in Tel Aviv. They’ll let this guy off too. Israel is very right wing and a theocracy. Religion rules all and LGBT folks are sinners. If the government really cared about the health and safety of LGBT folks he never would have been anywhere

I’ve always wanted to ask a murderous religious zealot why they would violate the first commandment to enforce some much more banal rule, and what their god would think of that. Morally it’s so repugnant to me as a secular humanist that I can’t even conceive of his pureile hate-crusted little heart, but even just

Netanyahu knows all about despicable hate crimes. He commits them every day.

Fair point. The only places you hear about violence like this in America is in schools, churches, movie theatres, fast food restaurants, street corners, office buildings, quilting circles, swap meets and outside/inside police stations.

Ah yeah, cognitive dissonance at its finest. I don’t think there’s much to “misunderstand” about him saying that the government of Mexico is sending rapists and drug dealers to America.

Let different sports be different. I love a raucous crowd, but I much prefer quiet to tinny arena-manufactured noise. You used to be able to cheer at an NBA game but now what’s the point? Arenas play instrumentals while the ball is in play, then the PA really goes ballistic when it’s not. All I can do is sit back and

The crowd repeatedly loudly called close balls “out” when in fact they were in. It was very disconcerting; that was the major problem.

Serena Williams is amazing. She won her first major in 1999. Sixteen years ago! And now she's making a run at a grand slam. It's hard to think of too many athletes who have remained so dominant for so long. Tim Duncan? Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? Peyton Manning? Babe Ruth?

No, it was completely rude and against the norm, especially at Wimbledon, which prides itself on holding to custom and etiquette. You are not supposed to cheer and yell in the middle of points—it’s a distraction to the players—and it was ridiculous that the chair umpire hadn’t said anything until then. I also find it

Being loud during points just isn’t a part of tennis tradition. Its like being quiet during a golfer’s drives or putts. British sports are supposed to be quiet. In reality its very hard to hear line judges when the crowd is being loud. Being able to hear a line judge can determine who wins a point.

If there were an epidemic of people throwing random women on a panel to avoid bad PR, wouldn’t we see women on panels? Since this almost never happens I think your dismay about token women is probably misplaced. Typically women have to have twice the qualifications to even be considered.

When you use the word “token”, i understand it to mean,”just throw any ole woman up there.” That's the confusion in your post.

The point is not adding “token” women. The point is recognizing the knowledge and skills women abundantly have, and are equal to or exceed that of male panalist, and incorporate them equally into the world.

The “healthy tan” thing is funny, because any time your skin darkens from sun exposure, you’ve done cellular damage. I used to get teased as a kid for not being able to get a tan and called “sickly” but the ironic thing is my skin was probably healthier than those people with their “healthy glow.”

Just because you haven’t met someone doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

Tawny is doing the public a great service by sharing her experience. I had a bad sunburn on my back as a teen, and by my early 20s I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. I am missing hunks of skin on my back where the cancerous spots were removed. I have a derm visit every year and they are still finding spots
