Engine out, but the fun part is getting the engine out is basically deconstructing the whole back half of the car. BMW’s service book says it’s a 15 hour job.

I cannot recommend even trying. They are a neatly packaged technological nightmare.

My Dad had one. Under warranty they did a $16k repair on an electrical gremlin. Great car to drive but I wouldn’t want to fix one. There’s a lot of first round engineering went into it.

No way I’m rich enough to afford a cheap BMW.

I love the implications that 10 miles of accord driving a week has any serious repercussions, or that selling one car to buy another (electric) car is automatically better for the environment than just keeping the old car

Oh I got you, yea but I can only really think of tires and eventual Axles being big $$$. the powertrain may be decently reliable however...Also I wanted to point this out:

The i8 has back seats! They’re about the same size as the rear seats in a BRZ/GT86, which means while they’re not ideal for humans, they’re great for putting your luggage in because the i8's trunk is tiiiny.

These things are cool, but keep in mind you’re still buying an incredibly rare (6600 units), $150k (in 2014 $) BMW supercar. Granted, they have half a B58 motor mounted to a Rav4 transmission, so the powerplants should be okay vis-a-vis parts availability. I’ve not looked into the battery packs on these specifically,

Go ahead and enjoy this technician video on ‘how to open the hood on an i8' and other horrid operations. Note the number of times they say ‘do something x way or you will break it’. The entire car is built like this. Pull on the emergency door handles wrong and they break. Open the hood wrong and you fuck the paint.

Yea, I am pretty much on the ride it till it dies train for my car and my wife’s may never really “die” at it’s current rate of usage. We bought it in ‘17 with 36k miles so in 7 years have put about 60k miles on it and I drove it for a year or two and drive more than average.

the engines are prone to going boom and any service is engine out. also the hybrid batteries are on borrowed time. there is a reason they are so cheap.

Gone are the days of 300hp v6 Camrys. So it only makes sense to buy an i8 instead!

the i8 looks like a million bucks”

Yep, after replacing both my freshwater line and wastewater line in the first 5 years of ownership, I can attest to that (I am also in Bmore, not that that means this person will have to do that too). Add to that painting and redoing some small interior things, then having to redo my rotten front porch and then

My first thought was Equinox EV. Same length as the Accord, but 4" wider. I’ve never leased a car but the lease deals near me for the Equinox EV is very tempting - $129/month with $3k due at signing.

The IONIQ 6 is grotesque. I’ll never understand the praise “car blogs” like Jalopnik heap on it.

Yea I know. I was there about 9 months ago. There were some killer lease deals on EV’s (still are, but that is when I first started looking), but after running the numbers it just wasn’t worth it for that “new car” feeling. My wife’s car is paid off, has like 93k miles, is a ‘13 and she gets 40+ MPG and only has like

The Equinox EV is great. It’s not trying to be a sports car, it’s roomy, has good range and is affordable as far as EV goes.

I am going to be a real Debbie downer, but I think the answer here is to not buy anything right now. ’06 Accord with only 110k miles isn’t going to cost you much to keep running, so I guess unless you absolutely want an EV, it just seems odd. My wife and I are in a similar situation, and it just doesn’t make financial

The Air is huge. It's like 7" wider and 5" longer than the Accord in question.  It is a LOT of EV though.
